Why is the Israeli army finally worried that Gaza is on the brink of collapse?

Last week Israeli military officials for the first time echoed what human rights groups and the United Nations have been saying for some time: that Gaza’s economy and infrastructure stand on the brink of collapse. They should know. More than 10 years ago the Israeli army tightened its grip on Gaza, enforcing a blockade on goods coming in and out of the tiny coastal enclave that left much of the 2 million-strong population there unemployed, impoverished and hopeless.

Electrical Power as Metaphor in Gaza

by Palestine Center Interns

In the developed world electricity is a given. It is a right afforded to people by their government even if through corroboration with some form of private administration such as a utility company. Many underestimate the realities of life without it. The people of Gaza have to face these very realities on a daily basis. In this paper we intend to display how the conditions for daily life in Gaza are decided without the consent of the people of Gaza. Through a focus on electricity, we can trace the power lines to their sources, physically and rhetorically, which will show how providing power to Gaza is to wield power over Gaza.

The Palestinian Struggle: Adversity on All Fronts

The 2017 Palestine Center Annual Conference addresses vital issues related to the 50 year Israeli occupation, coordination of the Palestinian Authority with the occupation, and Israel’s human rights violations. Panelists also examine the continuing problem of representation and media bias when it comes to the Palestinian issue, and analyze the status of Jerusalem, situation of Gaza, and persistence of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement with its challenges and successes in the United States.

Egyptian Policy in Palestine: A Downward Spiral

By Palestine Center Intern

2016 Palestine Center Annual Conference – Panel 2

In this panel we look at the conditions of Israel’s hegemony to consider future prospects. Panelists analyze the continuing reality of Israeli military occupation and incursions into Gaza, illegal settlements, intensified domination of Jerusalem, and detentions of Palestinian children. Panelists include Dr. Thomas Abowd, Brad Parker, and Dr. Abdelhamid Siyam.

Virtual Palestine

Gallery Al-Quds presented a new form of “virtual reality”—the reality of Palestine interpreted by artists in short and long-form videos and slide shows.  Several Gaza artists have contributed films and images difficult for them to share outside its borders.  Other artists created mini documentaries, metaphysical musings, hopeful fictions and painterly images of a reality that sometimes only they can see.
