The opening evening offers a rare chance to meet this extraordinary photographer. Her images of major public figures in the Middle East, as well as iconic landscapes and peoples of Palestine were exhibited widely, including at the U.S. Capitol, the White House, and the Cultural Paralympics in Atlanta as well as around the world.
Patterning informs the work of Samar Hussaini as she seeks to interpret Palestinian dress in the idiom of abstraction. Incorporating words, ornamental motifs, and images of repression and legacy, her art focuses on resilience and identity.
This panel conversation exploring the power of the arts to foster understanding and build empathy was held in coordination with the Gallery Al-Quds exhibition THEY HAVE NAMES and the Goethe Institute’s exhibition FORTY OUT OF ONE MILLION. Panelists included Rashwan Abdelbaki, Syrian visual artist, awarded a 2016 IIE – Artist Protection Fund Fellowship, Elif M. Gokcigdem, Historian of Islamic Art , scholar and editor, Fostering Empathy Through Museums (Rowman-2016), Dagmar Painter (moderator), Curator, The Jerusalem Fund-Gallery Al-Qud, Daniel Sonnentag, Berlin-based photographer and videographer, Kai Wiedenhöfer, Berlin-based photographer, and Helen Zughaib, Washington, D.C.-based visual artist.
Gallery Al-Quds, in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut and the Middle East Institute’s Arts and Culture Program, presents, An Arts Program on the Human Impact of the Syrian Conflict.
Gallery Al-Quds presented a new form of “virtual reality”—the reality of Palestine interpreted by artists in short and long-form videos and slide shows. Several Gaza artists have contributed films and images difficult for them to share outside its borders. Other artists created mini documentaries, metaphysical musings, hopeful fictions and painterly images of a reality that sometimes only they can see.
The San Francisco Public Library will host “Home Away from Home: Little Palestine by the Bay” an exhibit by Palestinian photographer Najib Joe Hakim. “Home” combines photography and recorded oral histories to tackle the question, “What does it mean to be Palestinian in America?”
Vian Shamounki Borchert is participating in multiple events including in the Summer in Miami “Figurative & Portrait” Exhibition at Miami’s Wynwood Art District at “Art & Sol” Gallery which is in the center of the art district and one block from the Wynwood Art Walls.
Through educational events, humanitarian support, and cultural preservation, the Jerusalem Fund is helping build the movement for Palestinian liberation.
