The San Francisco Public Library will host “Home Away from Home: Little Palestine by the Bay” an exhibit by Palestinian photographer Najib Joe Hakim. “Home” combines photography and recorded oral histories to tackle the question, “What does it mean to be Palestinian in America?”
Home Away From Home is a multi-media project juxtaposing recorded oral histories (in English) with portraits from the San Francisco Bay Area Palestinian community, second largest in the U.S. The viewer will be able to hear the voice while looking into the (photographed) face of the person telling their story.
This exhibition showcases photographs of Lebanon taken 50 years apart. His father Elias Hakim’s B&W photos document the young Hakim family’s emigration from Lebanon to the US in 1956. Najib’s color photos explore the country upon his return in 2006 after the latest war with Israel.
Through educational events, humanitarian support, and cultural preservation, the Jerusalem Fund is helping build the movement for Palestinian liberation.
