Inspired by the narrative paintings of Jacob Lawrence’s Migration series from 1940-1941, Zughaib’s “Syrian Migration Series” begins with the initial uprisings of the “Arab Spring” and its aftermath, the Syrian civil war and subsequent displacement of millions of people and a following refugee crisis that continues to affect the Arab world, Europe and the United States.
Berlin-based photographers Daniel Sonnentag and Kai Wiedenhöfer portray the human impact of the Syrian conflict. Their works, which approach the subject from different points of view, were exhibited at Gallery Al-Quds and the Goethe-Institut as a way to highlight this urgent humanitarian crisis.
Gallery Al-Quds presented a new form of “virtual reality”—the reality of Palestine interpreted by artists in short and long-form videos and slide shows. Several Gaza artists have contributed films and images difficult for them to share outside its borders. Other artists created mini documentaries, metaphysical musings, hopeful fictions and painterly images of a reality that sometimes only they can see.
Shubbak (meaning “window” in Arabic) is about to open in London – July 11 – 25, 2015. The city’s largest biennial festival of Arab culture was founded in 2011 by the Mayor of London. Lebanese-American artist Helen Zughaib exhibits her latest work in “Fractured Spring,” a series of paintings, calligraphy and installations exploring the implications of the Arab Spring.
You may have noted that the gallery is now called The Jerusalem Fund Gallery Al-Quds. This addition helps to place us in context as we continue to present the art of Palestinians, Arabs and Arab Americans, as well as non-Arabs whose work touches on the Middle East.
Palestinian arts are flourishing this spring. Among the winners of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize 2012, awarded at Art Dubai in March, is Palestinian artist Taysir Batniji.
