The Jerusalem Fund is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Edmund Ghareeb as Senior Scholar. “We have collaborated on projects with Dr. Ghareeb for many years,” said Dr. Subhi Ali, chair of The Jerusalem Fund’s Board of Advisors, “and now we are happy to welcome him to join us in a scholarly capacity.”
Home Away From Home is a multi-media project juxtaposing recorded oral histories (in English) with portraits from the San Francisco Bay Area Palestinian community, second largest in the U.S. The viewer will be able to hear the voice while looking into the (photographed) face of the person telling their story.

The Palestine Center ended its 2015 Summer Intern Lecture Series last week with a panel entitled “Operation Protective Edge: Representation in the U.S. Media.” Panelists Dr. Edmund Ghareeb, professor of Global Kurdish Studies at American University, and Omar Baddar, political analyst, digital producer, and human rights advocate, gave their perspective on American coverage of the 2014 Gaza war across different media outlets. Our interns sat with Omar Baddar after the lecture to probe further into how U.S. media has shaped American understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Harassment and violence are daily concerns for Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza. Dating back to the beginning of Israeli occupation in 1967 (see our last blog post on settler violence), the Israeli Defense Forces and Israeli settlers have attacked Palestinian civilians on a routine basis. Reports of settler violence against men, women, and children from all areas of the West Bank continue to pour into databases. Recently, a Palestinian home was set on fire by Israeli settlers in Duma, Nablus, killing 18-month-old Ali Dawabshe and hospitalizing the Dawabshe family. While multiple news outlets covered the attack, most instances of settler violence go unreported.
Artistic Weapons of Mass Communication presents the work of five artists who utilize different creative means to communicate strong statements through their art, challenging injustice and hoping to open our eyes to a deeper mutual understanding.
In Paris last week, I noticed this sign, dedicating a square in the 6th arrondissment to Mahmoud Darwish. Mahmoud Darwish Square (Place Mahmoud Darwich) was dedicated by former Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoë and President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas on July 15, 2010.

The Palestine Center began its 2015 Summer Intern Lecture Series last week with a panel entitled “Gaza in Context: Broader Implications in the Palestinian Plight.” Panelists Dr. Nathan Brown, professor of Political Science at George Washington University, and Dr. Yousef Munayyer, executive director of the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, gave their take on Gaza’s place within the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Our interns sat with the speakers after the lecture to probe further into how Gaza adds to and complicates the conflict.

With the anniversary of Israel’s war on Gaza, activists, analysts, and policymakers have been writing about the situation on the ground one year later, and how the political landscape has (or hasn’t) changed. The 51-day onslaught devastated this besieged parcel of land by the Mediterranean Sea and left thousands dead, wounded, homeless, jobless, poor, and hungry.
Nasser Nawaja: If, in the coming weeks, the Israeli government carries out demolition orders served on some 340 residents of Susiya, I will be forced to take my children in my arms as our home is destroyed and the village razed once again.
Through educational events, humanitarian support, and cultural preservation, the Jerusalem Fund is helping build the movement for Palestinian liberation.
