2016 Summer Intern Lecture: “Conceptions of Mobility”

Dr. Julie Peteet explores mobility as an intended consequence of military occupation in a keynote lecture that opens the 2016 Summer Intern Lecture Series, “Mobility: Israel’s Structural Restrictions and Palestine’s Resistance” on July 11, 2016. She argues that Israeli policies of closure and separation through physical structures and bureaucratic requirements constrain Palestinians’ mobility. Dr. Peteet’s presentation draws from her research, fieldwork in the West Bank, and expertise in space and mobility, Palestinian culture, and resistance. 

Is it an occupation or an “occupation”?

One is hard pressed to ask, what is the problem in calling the Occupied Palestinian Territories just that, territory occupied by Israel in the 1967 war? This is the exact terminology of Amnesty International. Oxfam uses Occupied Palestinian Territory. The Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem employs Occupied Territories. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has adopted occupied Palestinian territory (oPt). Even the US Department of State refers to The Occupied Territories.

A gruelling life for Palestinian workers in Israel

Bethlehem, occupied West Bank – During the day, the Bethlehem Checkpoint 300 tells only half the story. A few lone travelers make the crossing in mere minutes, passing through multiple electronic turnstiles and a warehouse-like compound, and undergoing a quick passport check before leaving the occupied West Bank and entering Israel. For Palestinian workers making their way through the terminal during the dead of night, however, the same crossing can take hours.

PCHR Weekly Report: Israeli troops kill 10, wound 21 Palestinians during the past week

In its Weekly Report On Israeli Human Rights Violations in the Occupied Palestinian Territories for the week of 07- 13 January 2016, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) found that Israeli forces continued to use excessive force in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Nine Palestinian civilians, including two children, were killed, and one armed resistance fighter was killed by Israeli troops.
