The abundant gold and turquoise of Samar Hussaini’s mixed-media paintings suggest earth and minerals. But the New Jersey artist is primarily inspired by the thob (or thwawb), the traditional Arab tunic whose embroidery denotes its regional origins. “Resilient,” the title of Hussaini’s Gallery Al Quds show, includes two stand-alone versions of a thob, as well as pictures that incorporate its design motifs.
Dr. Qumsiyeh argues that movements towards uniformity such as Zionism have threatened the crucial diversity found in the landscape. This applies both to social diversity and also to biodiversity. Restoring our social and natural ecosystems to balance requires challenging ideas of dominance and hegemony, which Dr. Qumsiyeh discusses as a Palestinian Christian, a biologist, and a human rights activist.
Jack was fair and courageous in speaking his mind about this subject. He spoke with genuine passion, eloquence, humility and humor.
Dr. Shaheen once said, “the story tellers of today have a tremendous impact on the world as we perceive it.” His influence on these story tellers has helped to improve perceptions of Arab Americans, and we are tremendously grateful for all of his brave efforts.
