The U.S. Democratic Presidential Candidates on Israeli Occupation: A Brief History

In the past, any discussion of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by United States presidential candidates has centered around a few main talking points: One, Israel has the right to defend itself; Two, the U.S. values Israel as a beloved ally; and Three, the U.S. is committed to participating as an unbiased, third-party negotiator while securing a fair peace deal for both Israelis and Palestinians. What most U.S. politicians neglected to bring up were the inequalities and injustices faced by Palestinians living under Israeli occupation.

How deep is the historical illiteracy of Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic Party and Donald Trump and his party? It is so deep, they are even immune to déjà vu, also known as ‘cryptomnesia’, which is where history is forgotten but nevertheless stored in the brain. Consider how AIPAC and the White House and State Department advisers influence every decision on Palestine. They use the very same techniques to brainwash American officials into believing their positions on the fate of Palestine are in the national interest that Harry Truman’s advisers used.

Hillary Clinton should take balanced approach to Israel-Palestine

Many of us wonder, will Clinton strive at all to make Washington “an honest broker” during negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians? How beholden will she feel to the influences of her billionaire supporters? Will her narrow view of justice and fairness expand to consider the human and national rights of Palestinians? So far, her words have given us no reason to be optimistic.
