Jerusalem Fund Executive Director Highlights Gaza’s Plight at Harvard’s “Censorship & Consciousness” Conference

On March 22, 2024, Jehad Abusalim, the Executive Director of The Jerusalem Fund, delivered the keynote speech at Harvard University, at the Censorship and Consciousness Conference organized by the Bell Collective for Critical Race Theory. This address, set against the backdrop of the Fifth Annual HLS Critical Race Theory Conference’s theme, “Freedom Dreaming for a Radical Reconstruction,” offered an analysis of the situation in Gaza, spotlighting the urgency for global awareness and action.

Abusalim’s presentation dove deep into the historical and contemporary struggles faced by Palestinians in general, and those in Gaza in particular, detailing the devastating impacts of military aggressions, particularly those conducted by Israel with the United States’ support. He painted a vivid picture of Gaza’s transformation from a bustling hub of Palestinian culture and life into a landscape marked by ruins, loss, and ongoing resistance. Through a narrative rich with historical insights and personal experiences, Abusalim traced the resilience of the Palestinian people, emphasizing their enduring fight against attempts to erase their identity and rights to their land. His remarks extended beyond Gaza, drawing parallels to global struggles against oppression and marginalization, challenging the audience to reconsider the broader implications of Gaza’s situation in the context of international politics and human rights.

The speech was not just an exposition of facts but a heartfelt invitation to empathy and solidarity. Abusalim shared touching stories of life under siege, highlighting the everyday violence and hardship faced by Gazans—restrictions on movement, access to necessities, and the psychological scars left by constant threat. He critiqued the dehumanization inherent in the policies and attitudes that justify such blockades and military actions, advocating for a global acknowledgment of the injustices faced by Palestinian. The keynote concluded on a note of hope and unity, calling for a collective vision and action towards a world free from oppression, inspired by the spirit of resistance and resilience exemplified by Gaza and its people.

Held at Harvard Law School, the event saw robust participation from students, faculty, and the public, culminating in an engaging Q&A session that underscored the importance of discourse in the fight against censorship and for the amplification of marginalized voices.
