The Jerusalem Fund’s annual conference concluded with an enlightening panel discussion on the media’s complicity in the ongoing Gaza Genocide. The panel brought together a distinguished group of experts, each with extensive knowledge of corporate media dynamics and their role in shaping public perception. Moderated by the exceptional journalist Said Arikat, the Washington bureau chief for the Palestinian newspaper al-Quds, the panel featured Laila Al-Arian, a Washington DC-based journalist and the executive producer of Fault Lines, an award-winning current affairs program on Al Jazeera English. Also joining the conversation were Ryan Grim, a longtime D.C. reporter, breaking news from the halls of Congress and leading the Washington bureaus for The Intercept and HuffPost, and Katie Halper, a journalist, filmmaker, radio and podcast host. The expert panelists critically analyzed western media practices, examining how mainstream media outlets perpetuate false narratives that influence public opinion, shape government actions, and obscure accountability. The panelists also delved into the increased weaponization of antisemitism and lack of accountability from media outlets. The media bias which often manifests in downplaying Palestinian suffering and the staggering loss of life in Gaza has allowed the genocide to continue and legitimizes Israel’s war crimes and barbaric actions by framing them as justifiable or not reporting them all together.
