We have been deeply moved by the outpouring of generosity and support in response to our emergency appeal for Gaza in 2023. As we step into 2024, the enormity of the challenges ahead becomes ever more apparent. The devastation in Gaza has reached unprecedented levels: over 30,000 precious lives have been lost to Israeli bombardment, more than 65,000 individuals have been injured, and nearly two million Palestinians are now displaced. Entire cities, towns, and villages within the Gaza Strip have been obliterated.
Before this catastrophic aggression, The Jerusalem Fund was at the forefront, supporting local civil society organizations in Gaza. These organizations worked tirelessly to bring hope amidst the harsh realities of a 17-year blockade, which rendered Gaza, according to United Nations reports, unlivable. Our grants aided in providing vital care for children with diabetes, the installation of solar panels at community institutions and clinics, and the distribution of educational resources to children.
With the ongoing aggression, our focus shifted towards delivering emergency aid essential for survival. However, the pre-war challenges are now dwarfed by the current crisis. The people of Gaza have shown remarkable resilience and determination in the face of Israeli attempts to force them out and erase their presence. Yet, despite these adversities, the spirit of 2 million Palestinians in Gaza remains unbroken. They continue to stand firm, but they cannot do so alone. They need our support more than ever.
The task before us is daunting. Starvation, disease, and displacement are mounting burdens on the people of Gaza. This year, we are calling on you to help us meet these challenges head-on, to provide essential aid, and to support community organizations facing the monumental task ahead.
