1/23 | Digital Rights Under Siege: Combating Online Censorship of Palestinians

Join us next week for a conversation with Nadim Nashif, the executive director and co-founder of 7amleh: The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media.

7amleh – The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media works towards a free, fair, and safe digital space for all Palestinians. However, since the beginning of the War on Gaza, that has become increasingly more difficult. Censorship of Palestinian voices and narratives on social media is at an all time high, while incitement to violence and anti-Palestinian racism spreads rampantly across many prominent platforms. Furthermore, 7amleh has documented a rise in AI-driven dehumanization of Palestinians, as generative AI tools mistranslated the Arabic word for “Palestinian” into “Palestinian Terrorist” on Instagram, and image generators produced depictions of Arab children with guns from the simple prompt of “Palestinian” on WhatsApp. These are just a few of the ways in which the digital space has been weaponized against Palestinians in this time of tragedy. Nadim will speak to all of this and more, as well as what is being done to fight digital discrimination and hate directed at Palestinians.

Nadim Nashif is the executive director and co-founder of 7amleh: The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media.
