Each year, the Palestine Center hosts a Memorial Lecture honoring the late M. Cherif Bassiouni, paying tribute to Professor Bassiouni’s prolific legacy as a leading expert in international law.

M. Cherif Bassiouni was an Egyptian-American and emeritus professor of law at DePaul University in Chicago, where he taught for almost five decades, and earned a robust reputation as “the Godfather of International Criminal Law” and a war crimes expert. This year, we are delighted to be hosting Ahmed Abofoul to deliver the Bassiouni Memorial Lecture.

Ahmed Abofoul is an International Lawyer, and Legal Research and Advocacy Officer at Al-Haq Organization, the oldest and one of the most preeminent Palestinian human rights organizations.

An international law expert who was born and raised in the Gaza Strip and who endured several of Israel’s previous attacks, Mr. Abofoul is uniquely situated to provide expert analysis on the international law aspects of Israel’s attack upon and siege of 2.3 million Palestinians, including one million children, in the Gaza Strip.

In addition to his position with Al-Haq Organization, Mr. Abofoul is also a Research Fellow on legal mobilization at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam. Born and raised in Gaza, based in the Hague, he holds a Master’s degree (LL.M.) in Public International Law, specializing in international criminal law, from Leiden University and holds a bachelor of law from Al-Azhar University in Gaza.
