Easter in the Holy Land

Happy Easter from the Jerusalem Fund.

For the Christians of the Holy Land, Easter is considered the holiest Christian holiday.

Easter is known as “the Great Feast,” while Christmas is known as “Little Feast”. The Saturday that precedes Easter Sunday is considered the climax of the celebrations and prayers of Holy Week in occupied Palestine, as the Saturday of Light is a tradition of the Orthodox Church that marks the end of the 40 days of fasting and abstinence.

Jerusalem is the holy city for all Christians worldwide, the place of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection, the cradle of Christianity itself, and the site of one of the first churches. Under Israeli Occupation today, not many Palestinians can make it to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to participate in the Holy celebrations. The majority of Palestinian Christians have never attended, not due to a lack of interest on their part, but because Israel imposes restrictions on them, specifically on young people, in terms of entering the city of Jerusalem.

Have a blessed Easter weekend from the Jerusalem Fund Family.
